BROTHERHOOD and BARTERED SOULS is a story that provides an answer as to why we are here what our destiny is. It is a spiritual, but not a religious story. There are drugs, suspense, love, murder, and betrayal in the story.

Jon, the lead character, is approached by the mysterious Mr. Turel, an Angel from the spirit world, who convinces Jon that he is born to a destiny that will impact this world and the next. The Angel convinces Jon that there is no God and Satan and that the Bible was just a fantasy story made up to try to explain the existence of the world. On the contrary, there are two, but
equal, Gods that created the earth and mankind together much like the union of a man and women creates a child.

Man was created/born with a Soul. That Soul has the capacity to “love”. The spirit beings need the “love” from man to be content. The origin of “sin” in the world came from their need and greed for this mysterious phenomenon of “love”. It caused a rift between them that set in motion the inevitability of a spiritual war that would end the physical world and leave only one God in charge. Jon and his close friends were used by one of the
beings to gain an advantage over the other. Just as jealousy and greed caused the divide in the spirit world, it also caused problems in our physical world. It caused Jon’s closest friend and partner to betray him and unwittingly hasten the inevitable spiritual war unless Jon can somehow reverse events that have been set in motion.

The story takes the reader from small town America to half way around the world to the secret location of the Garden of Eden and back again. It takes place over a 50+ year timeframe beginning in the 1960s and culminating in the present day with a surprise ending.

Very interesting. Enjoyed the characters and the plot. But mostly, it raised intense questions. It places questions of life in stark terms. I would recommend it to my friends

Brotherhood and Bartered Souls edition by John McCrary Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This novel is an excellent read. It is very suspenseful and keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next.
This is an excellent book. It kept me guessing all the way to the end. A must read.
A new classic regarding the battle of good and evil. J. Arthur McCrary leads us to question the motives of angels, loyalty of friends, and the price of success. Brotherhood & Bartered Souls is imaginative and offers an array of characters rarely found in a single novel. I'm waiting for the sequel, and hope it is released soon!
I just finished reading Brotherhood & Bartered Souls by J. Arthur McCrary. This book was a page turner, I couldn't put it down. It is a must read for any book club as it will give you plenty to think about and discuss. The battle between good and evil is told with a modern twist. I can hardly believe this is the author's debut novel, because he nailed it. I'm looking forward to more from this author.
I just finished Brotherhood and Bartered Souls. This is a good read, especially the second half of the book - which is very good! McCrary's writing during the challenges of deciding how to grow or not grow the business and the tensions introduced between the main characters and forward from there - and specifically how to deal with George all the way through to the mad dash to Nairobi is compelling and often riveting.

I've read a lot of very good books in my lifetime and the measure for me is am I anxious to get back to the book! And I was, especially once it's clear George will have to be dealt with and may be killed by EJ! I just had to know how this was going to play out - and you knew it couldn't be good for the business partnership and no way was it going to be at all good for George.

The ubiquitous Mr. Turel is the character that links all the action in Souls. While his moments with all the characters in Souls and especially with Jon seem ephemeral, he will have you pondering the impact of faith in your life - as well as truth, good and evil in all its forms.

Near the end, after Jon has decided to end this attempt at everlasting life, is when the action is down right cloak-and-dagger and the book becomes the proverbial page-turner! The tension and action was palpable and the chess match if you will - is on! The Rafael character (even though largely a player near the end) is awesome and his dialog and actions while minimal, are well written. His skill set is totally believable based on his relationship with Jon during his military years and what Jon reveals about his character and his military and covert operations training/assignments.

While I enjoyed reading the entire book, some of it was familiar for me. I grew up for all intent and purpose in "Ramcat" myself! I know, have known and still know brothers like the characters in Souls and yes, I've known brothers like Jon! I've known drug dealers, thieves, murderers, convicts and ex-cons, and brothers who managed to escape it all - if we can ever really escape. That said, someone else lucky enough to have avoided the "Ramcats" of our "great nation" during their formative years will find this section of Souls compelling.

As the book wraps up, and "the race to the tree of life is on," McCrary's writing is at its best. One can visualize the two teams (i.e. Jon vs. EJ) in those camouflaged vans - again, both teams driven by the desires of Mr. Turel in a heated chase for life! McCrary writes it all like scenes from a movie. Richard Wright and John Grisham could not have described the action in words any better - and certainly not with their first novels!

Bottom line, this is a fine first effort. Put Brotherhood and Bartered Souls on your reading list and read it! You won't be disappointed.
