This volume is written as a university textbook covering the history of ancient Rome. It gives especial length and treatment to political developments within Rome and military-diplomatic engagements abroad. (It was the textbook I used in graduate school for a survey course on Roman history.) Yet it doesn't present similar detail to the cultural or social side of Rome, and this element I missed. First published in 1921, its successive editions largely preserved this treatment. There are far too few illustrations for my own preference, though there are sufficient number of high quality maps. The author's style of writing is too often old-style professorial, dry and occasionally tedious, but within its limits, it is a worthwhile read for those who wish to devote sufficient time for studying it, and a comprehensive, scholarly, and fair analysis of the spectacle of ancient Rome, from its beginnings up to the mid-6th century CE.

Good background information.
good product
I have not completed my read, but it is a classic history of Rome and the price was right!
For a person seriously interested in understanding Roman history, this would be the book. It does, however, get way into the weeds. Lots of detail; however, if one sticks with it, a complete understanding of Roman History will result.
Detailed, play by play, ruler by ruler, vanquished people by vanquished people account of development of the Rome that eventually fell. Excellent. Print is tiny, though. Thus, the 4 stars.
It is a basic history of Rome, it goes as far back in pre history as it can and discusses what is known and what has been surmised. It is an interesting and steady read. No real surprises, a good basic history of Rome.
Would've been 5 stars if it hadn't taken so long to get going. I've never been into Roman history and I didn't know if I could really get into it now. But after the first couple of chapters it got to be a story I Could sink my teeth into. Long, but then what's to be expected!
